THE PEEN SCENE

YOUR CITY'S A SUCKER. MY CITY'S A CREEP.

1.31.2010
things to do SUNDAY 1/31/2010

I normally take Sundays off, but these two shows are just too massive to ignore. First of all, Franki Chan of IHEARTCOMIX is playing a last minute free party at Barbarella! Yup, that new video club on Red River everyone has been loving lately. One look at the lineup and you know this will be a night you won't soon forget. Vicious, Hot Britches!, Blake Brandon, Hoodie Allen, and of course the world famous DJ Franki Chan. Our good friend Miguel of uLOVEi will be in control of all those TV screens Barbarella has to offer, dazzling your eyes with visuals all night long. I'm sure you'd expect to pay a few dollars for a dance party like this, but the fact is, shit is mother fucking free! Barbarella even has cheap drinks, like $2 Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. E-P-I-C.

Any given Sunday at Barcelona can be described as epic, massive, even mind-blowing. However, tonight...you're not fucking ready for what's about to take place. Whether you're familiar with 16 Bit and his bass assault or not, you need to witness this. Obviously the Mad Classy boys Sharkweek, DJ JE, and Chango are gonna deliver some crazy shit, those dudes are the reason dubstep is what it is here in Austin. 16 Bit though. Fuck. 16 Bit is about to crush Austin. Not to mention the fact that the bass down in Barcelona just got even more ruthless with the purchase of some brand new subs. You just might even have your photo snapped by The Peen Scene, we'll see! Also, for the first time (ever?) Barcelona is opening its doors to 18 and up for $15. For 21 and up this party will cost you $10, but if you 'MadClassy' to 68683 you'll be let into the party for just $7! What a way to end January!

things to do SATURDAY 1/30/2010

All of you fashionable Austin peens are required to attend this party ry-churr. Its early(ish), Beauty Bar from 6pm-10pm. So, you can still hit everything else you want to do tonight. First, RSVP at www.Eavesdropper-pr.com/rsvp. Now let the high class rummaging begin! This is Austin's first official "Rock & Swap"! Don't know exactly what that means? Allow me to explain. Free Treaty Oak Rum, free sweets from The Cupcake Bar, free jams from the Businessman DJs, but more importantly its a no holds barred free clothes free for all! You have two options for entry, either 10 items of clothing (in good condition, nasty) or $5. This event has so much awesome shit going on, I'm honestly probably not doing it justice. So I'll just quit trying.

Wtf can I say about this party I haven't said several times already? Nothing, that's what. So, I'll just recap the crunk. If the RSVP is still open, you need to do that here. With that you'll be treated to free Jack Daniels and Dripping Springs Vodka to be mixed with Maine Root and Sweet Leaf Tea. The party will be DJed by Kid Slyce and DJ QD (The Get Right Kids). If you get hungry you can buy a squished sam from Austin Daily Press. Also, make sure you dress in your funday best because Alison Narro will have a photobooth on site. Its all brought to you by Southside Sanctuary and Sneak Attack, so obviously you'll have fresh 2010 t-shirts and kicks to feast your eyes on. I've even gone and grabbed a map for you Peens. Have fun!

Yeah, a third party with free booze! Austin goes hard sometimes! Not only does this official TXRD after party at Chupacabra have free Treaty Oaks Rum and free food, but its got two srsly great Austin bands playing too! Posr takes the stage at 11pm and before them at 10pm its all about Frantic Clam. Tickets are $10, however, if you have a ticket stub from the TXRD bout you get in for half price!

Lanai, that awesome rooftop lounge, is going to be fucking packed tonight! You know Toddy B from Hypersonic Radio, well, he has got a lot of friends and its his birthday. Happy Birthday, Toddy B! He and Jesse Brede are both going to be spinning sets up there at Lanai. If you want to participate in this celebration of birth, get there early!

Let me suggest you hit up Specs if you plan on hitting this dance party up. Shit is straight up BYOB, that means no last call! Kind of awesome. That's just the beginning of what's awesome about his party though. The Independent is pulling out all the stops! Its got a crazy allstar music line up featuring The White White Lights, The Sour Notes, Mexicans With Guns, DJ Busby, DJ Nick Nack, and finally a special DJ set by MVSCLZ! Damn. You'll also get and exclusive first look at the brand new issue of Bleach Online. $6 gets you in and dancin' 'til 4am.

After all the clothes have been swapped and the free booze is long gone at the previously mentioned "Rock & Swap". Have no fear, Beauty Bar will continue the party. They've enlisted the one and only Learning Secrets DJs to keep the party going strong until 2am. Very able hands. I'm guessing this dance party is free, but I'm not positive.

Speaking of able hands, Orion and Prince Klassen. Yeah. Those fuckin' "Cut-ups" will be at Red Fez once again. This shit is so ill it should be illegal, but free!? Sheeit. These dudes are legends, check'em out.

What could possibly make Austin's best hip hop dance party even better? How about DJ InVerse? That's exactly who is guest DJing with the Table Manners Crew's DJ Tatts and Digg at Plush. As always, shit is free with tons of drink specials.

With Prepmode dropping beats in the home of the basement of the Alamo, who will play Barcelona tonight? The Table Manners Crew's resident record scratching madman Kid Slyce, that's who! So don't worry, there'll still be plenty of drinking and dancing to go around. The out of control is under control.

As is the case with the past few Saturdays, "New Noise" at Barbarella is about to melt your ears with an all out indie electro attack. If its hot, with a good beat it'll be played. Hot Chip, Peaches, MSTRKRFT, and so on, you get the picture. $2 P.B.R. all night too!

Last night The Paramount Theatre hosted The Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular. Tonight it's Michael Jackson's turn! That's right, The Michael Jackson Laser Spectacular is here! That didn't take long. Tickets to this show range from $31 to $39. Shamon!

Oh no, The Paramount isn't the only spot in Austin with crazy fucking lasers tonight! The Highball is getting in on the molecular oscillations too! Free laser pointers for the first 150 people at the party, jams by DJ Fuckin' A, a sci-fi costume contest, and all of The Highball's lasers cranked to the max. Step into the future and show those aliums how we peens party! Also, apparently the future is free!

AFTER PARTY AT MUSIC GYM! Prepare yourselves for "DJ Dildo-Head Hoodie" a.k.a. Hoodie Allen! All I have to say is, I didn't make this flyer. However, that's not to say that I'm not a fan though. Music Gym has been reliable for great after parties and even greater flyers lately. As always, free booze until the sun comes up with a $5 donation at the door.

1.29.2010
things to do FRIDAY 1/29/2010

3 hours of free beer and dancing for an excellent cause? That's exactly what's going down at Stubbs from 5:30pm-8:30pm. DJs like DJ Manny, Peligrosa Allstar's Manolo Black, DJ Chicken George, and El John Selector have all donated their time to help the Haitian relief effort, as well as get you dancing while you drink the free beer. A $10 donation is required to join in the fun. Worth. It.

Yes, I realize the show is sold out. That's actually not why I'm posting it way up here. If you are one of the procrastinator types who missed out on tickets to tonight's Girls show at The Parish, there's hope for you yet. Girls will be playing a free instore at Waterloo Records today! If you want to see the instore show, it starts at 5:00pm, but I suggest you stop procrastinating and get there early!

Straight up, I highly suggest you check out The Mohawk tonight. Two of my absolute favorite bands in Austin as well as one of my favorite DJs will all be playing there. I recently had the opportunity to give The Deli Magazine 3 Austin bands to watch in 2010, S U R V I V E and Missions were both among my chosen acts. Missions actually almost won the whole thing! Anyway, tonight at The Mohawk you can see what all the fuss is about. Missions, S U R V I V E, How I Quit Crack, Gobi will all share the stage while DJ Orlando Mas spins jams between sets to keep the energy electric. So much amazing Austin talent for just $6!

If a great Austin dance party is more up your alley tonight, two words, Beauty Bar! Starting at 9:00pm with the smooth sounds of Kenny Loggins, Toto, Michael Mcdonald, Hall & Oates, and so on. Yeah, we're talking yacht rock, and your captain for this venture will be Sebastian Nebula. Immediately following the early soft rock adventure, Hot Britches! and Prince Klassen will turn things into a proper dance party until 2am! Did I mention this epic ass dance party can be yours for the low low price of free!? I didn't, but it is!

Republic Live has gone and imported a dance party all the way from Germany for tonight. Stoneface & Terminal are in town to play along with Andrew Parsons, Allen Tagle, and DJ Shwann all for Kel E's birthday! That's a fucking massive b-day party, huh?! Tickets to this celebration of dance and birth are just $8.

Yet another nice assault of local bands going on tonight at Red 7. While Pong, Churchwood, and the beautiful sounds of Death Is Not A Joyride are fist pumping outside, the Team Fab DJs will be doing their thing inside. However, I've heard if the weather gets ruthless outside the entire show will be moved indoors.

For once I know who the special guest bass bomber at Plush's dubstep party will be! John E. Glock will more than hold his own with the Friday heavyweights Grommit, I/O, Sloppy Jackson, and Tyrant. Btw, its completely free!

I was a little confused by my facebook event invites, I had one for "Arabian Night at Red Fez" and the date was tonight. With a little research, however, I cleared it right up. The Arabian jams will cease at 10:30, that's when the indie remixes, disco, and tech house will begin. Based on those genres, I'm obviously talking about the Learning Secrets DJs! They always seem to get hit with bad weather for their Friday night dance parties at Red Fez. Still, that never stops the good music or the good times.

You're most definitely ready for a drink and a dance tonight, otherwise you wouldn't be reading The Peen Scene. Check it out, I've got just the place! Barcelona with the Table Manners Crew's DJ Crown is about to go off! With a drink or two dancing is inevitable! You'll see.

Just across 7th street from Beauty Bar, The Creekside Lounge has got a killer dance party of their own. Anywhere Orion is playing brings out a crowd. A crowd fully prepared to do some dancing, a fair amount of drinking too. Thus, Creekside is the perfect spot.

I went to see The Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular a few years ago, when it was still at Austin Music Hall. My biggest complaints were how mega uncomfortable their chairs were and that it took sp long to start that my drugs done wore off. They've gone and remedied the first problem by moving it to the legendary and luxurious Paramount Theatre on Congress. Tickets range from $26 to $37.

The Highball has got tons of flavor for you non-downtown peens. First of all, DJ Dojo will be in full effect with both DJ Manny and DJ Bigface behind the decks tonight! Uhm, there will be bboys too. Yup. It don't stop there either! Super Sonic Soul Squad and Brownout! are also set to perform. If none of that tickles your fancy, you've always got bowling and karaoke in that bitch. The show will cost you $7 spankies.

Yo La Tengo and the awesomely lo fi Times New Viking will play to a sold out crowd tonight at Antone's. If you've got tickets, have fun!
