THE PEEN SCENE

YOUR CITY'S A SUCKER. MY CITY'S A CREEP.

things to do WEDNESDAY 3/31/2010

Round two. Fight! Not really, but it is round two of The Mohawk's "From The Mind Of Adi" series. Like the previous installment, there will be free food (pizza from Homeslice) and the first 100 people to come out will also be treated to a free Lone Star. So there's that, however, the real reason to hit The Mohawk tonight is the fact that three great local bands are playing! She Sir, The Authors and White Dress and the previously mentioned belly fillers for just $5. Shit starts at 6pm.

Got a spare 15 spankies in your wallet? Well, it just so happens that's the price of tonight's big Ted Leo and the Pharmacists show at Emo's! Speaking of Ted Leo, have you seen the footage of him covering Tears For Fears' classic "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" for the new A.V. Club series Undercover? So. Good. If you haven't, here. Now if that doesn't get you pumped up to see Ted Leo live tonight with Screaming Females and Sally Crewe & the Sudden Moves, you're probably a d-bag.

DJs Richard Henry and Miguel Angel are taking on a shit-ton of my favorite dance genres tonight at Plush! If you're looking for a dance party tonight, there's no doubt, this is the one. Balie Funk, Cumbia, Soca, Bossa Nova, Merengue and heavy bass? Abso-fucking-lutely!

Right next door to Plush, Barbarella is comin' with the traditional side of dance party jams. Every Wednesday Richard.Gear and The DJ Reber play the best new, old, newer, older dance music for their free party Brand New Retro. Did I mention that I fucking love the shit out of Barbarella?

Hopefully The Get Right Kids have fully recovered from the huge things they had going on during SXSW, because tonight they've got a dance party to throw. I'm sure they have. I'm also quite sure of the fact that Red Fez will be poppin' off tonight. Hip hop, electro, and whatever else Kid Slyce and DJ QD feel like throwin' down.

There aren't very many cities in the country where you'll find this many different kinds of dance parties happening on any night, much less a Wednesday! Lanai has an awesome venue (rooftop), an awesome sound system and they know how to fucking use it. Tonight they've got house and techno experts L.Boogie, DJ Jonene and C. Nelson playin' a free party. The weather seems just about perfect for a rooftop jammy.

Mmmmmmm fried fish, Beauty Bar's got it and live music by Jonathan Terrell too! If they can manage to fry up some slam catfish while keeping the smell of rotten homeless vagina fish to a minimum, this spot will be hard to beat tonight.

Last night Austin Vida gave you ample opportunity to win your way into the Sexy Marvin show happening at Stubbs tonight. If you weren't lucky enough to win or were just too lazy to make it out to their listening party, you can definitely still go. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.

Per usual, Red 7 has got the rock. Strangers, Former Thieves, Illustrations, Doubt, Mayans and Beyond Gods and Empires are all set to do a bit of face melting.

WOVEN BONES "IT FEELS ALRIGHT"

Woven Bones have been a distorted obsession of mine for a while now. Looks like the rest of the country better prepare itself to join me. On May 18th the lo-fi Austin trio will be releasing their debut full length "In and Out and Back Again" upon the world. At first listen "If It Feels Alright"'s instrumentation remains nicely fuzzed-out, while the vocals get poppier than what Woven Bones have done in the past. It reminds me a lot of Crocodiles, but I fucking love Crocodiles, so that keeps me proper excited for the new Woven Bones album.

things to do TUESDAY 3/30/2010

Austin's resident solo metal madman Daniel Francis Doyle is heading out on tour for a long while, but first he rages with Yellow Fever, Silent Diane and Flowers tonight at Red 7. As is usually the case, I don't have the slightest clue how much the cover is.

Sonar Tuesday is flippin' it just a lil bit tonight. With Nondeskript and Kutthroat on the decks you can expect a good amount of the drum n bass you've come to know and obsess over, but they're gonna be spinnin' their favorite ragga for you Tuesday night partiers too. The dance party remains free and the $2 beers are always in effect.

The Chinese are coming! Its true, tonight The China Rocks tour is making at stop at Emo's and its got a great fucking lineup. I probably should've figured they could produce some killer bands considering its the most populated country on the planet. Carsick Cars, PK 14 and AV Okubo are all three worth checking out, especially for just $7.

More live rock to choose from tonight, Beauty Bar is getting in the mix with Milk Thistle, In Situ Sound and like every Tuesday DJ Scorpio. Also like every Tuesday at Beauty Bar, its free!

DJ Manny is spinnin' some of my favorite genres in the world down at Red Fez. Punk, dancehall, funk, and more. He's constantly on the top of Austin DJ lists, you should probably find out why.

Austin Vida is hosting another one of their ever popular listening parties tonight. Like the previous 3 or so its taking place at Mi Casa Cantina, however, this time they've got tons of great stuff to giveaway to participating listeners. How about 2 Pachanga tickets, 2 Los Amigos Invisibles tickets, 2 Sexy Marvin tickets and copies of the new album (Circular Colectivo)!? I thought so. Oh yeah, you'll be listening to the new Maldita Vecindad album.

Sometimes you just gotta get obliterated and sing. I know. If tonight is one of those nights, there's always Shakespeares famous $2 long island ice teas and free karaoke.

JAMMY JAM - ZLAM DUNK WE'RE ALL DEAD

After listening to this FREE EP by Zlam Dunk on repeat about 10 times in a row, I want to beat myself the fuck down for never going to see these guys live. They now join The Strange Boys, Harlem and countless other bands who've ruled right under my nose, while I somehow remained oblivious for months. Zlam Dunk are technically from San Marcos, but that's just an Austin suburb at this point. They sound like a mix of Les Savy Fav and the most ruckus parts of old mewithoutyou (without all the preachy christian bullshit), two bands known for their live assault. If you're a fan of fast fun music, download this right now. You'll be hooked within the first 30 seconds of "Ocean of 74".

things to do MONDAY 3/29/2010

The biggest show of the night is definitely going down at The Mohawk. I love me some break-beats and that's just what "The Vantastic Teleportour" is bringing to Austin via KilloWatts, The Great Mundane and Aligning Minds. Its gonna be a dance party and a live electronics show all wrapped into one crunkly packaged evening. $8 at the door, doors at 8pm. If you're didn't get your fix this weekend, do this.

Richard Henry and Blake Brandon are throwing a dance party of their own at Beauty Bar tonight. There's no cover at the door, cheap drinks and great music. Mondays is blowin' up!

Just across the street there's another free dance party going down. This one is led by Sebastian Nebula, the DJ who'll play everything from bmore to yacht rock. He's also been called Knuckle Rumbler's favorite new DJ. So, you just might want to check him out tonight at Creekside.

Feelin' like fuck some DJ music? Well, fuck YOU Plush is goin' down on the rock show tip tonight. Giant Steps Productions presents No Champions, Closet Drama, Knights and DSGNS in a free 21 and up show.

Honestly, I've never seen DJ Supafly spin before, so I have no idea what kind of music he plays. Either way, he's at Red Fez and that place's sound system will make anybody dance.

I don't know if its the fact that these hillbillies remind me of some of the people from where I grew up (North Carolina) or if its the sweet dance moves on display in the preview, but this documentary looks awesome. Alamo Drafthouse-Ritz's Music Monday comes through again!

FER YER HEALTH - EROL ALKAN at REPUBLIC LIVE

Thursday, April 15, 2010 will be a night to remember here in Austin, Texas. With a depressing lack of headliner DJ/producers coming to town so far this year, Learning Secrets are stepping their game way the fuck up, bringing the one and only Erol Alkan to Republic Live! The party-throwing DJ Duo have even gone so far as to release a humiliating an absurd video showing their excitement over this event (see below). After what is sure to be the dance party to end all dance parties in Austin, Alkan will be hopping on a plane to blast a headlining set in a tent out in the California desert. Some festival called Coachella. Then, he's leaving the country all together. So buy your tickets, catch his show at Republic Live or forever hold your peace.

PON DE PEEN

Now I'm not gonna pretend like I know exactly what is going on in this video. I'm not a DJ. However, I do know that Prepmode is by far one of the most talented turntablists in the city. This video is evidence to back that claim up. I've seen him pull this stunt live and while Major Lazer's neo-classic "Pon De Floor" kills every time no matter what, this tone trick is that little something that makes the dance floor explode. Enjoy, but don't bite!

SXSW 2010 ACCORDING TO THE PEEN SCENE

Ever thought to yourself, "I wonder exactly what The Peen Scene did during this year's SXSW Festival"? Of course you have! Well, some of you may know this already, but we're now working with a NYC based blog called GreenShoelace.com. As my first writing assignment, I've written semi-detailed accounts of my SXSW experiences. It also gave me a chance to display some of my favorite photos from the festival. Enjoy!

3.27.2010
things to do SATURDAY 3/27/2010

Holy shit! I'd love to see Hall & Oates, but $75 - $150 tickets? I can't go for that. If you're a mega-superfan, its going down tonight at The Long Center.

Aiight, Imma be straight up. The main reason I'm writing about this party is because Beauty Bar has promised free beer from 10pm - 11pm. Well, that and the fact that Prince Klassen is spinning a DJ set at some point in the night. Other than that you're getting a southern rock show by Brake Vegas, The Heroine and The Bexar County Bastards.

This Bollywood Bash is now 7 years deep. This year its happening at The Mohawk for $10. Aleem Khan, Raz K and The Flying Paneer Sisters are all doing their thing to help support Saheli. Will you be there?

A few weeks ago Toddy B and Jesse Brede captured the titles of Austin Chronicle's number 2 and 3 DJs in the city. Tonight that all-star team is putting their skills on display up on that rooftop with the killer sound system. They do so once a month at Lanai. Best of all the dance party is completely free.

Red 7 has been hosting a mini free week for a few days now. Tonight Dallas' Broadcast Sea joins Austin bands We'll Go Machete, Tow The Line (ex members of Recover) and Autons for the extra cheap madness.

Probably my favorite night of the week for the fact that I'm off work, have no work the next day and now because of this dance party at Barbarella. Its like they've gone and hooked up my ipod to the system and you know I have better taste in music than you! If you don't think so, just suck on some $2 PBRs and keep your mouth shut!

Call him Prepmode, call him DJ Simple Simon, I call him that DJ who can take on any genre imaginable and make me dance. Barcelona has been letting him rock parties for over a year now, tonight included.

I'm not sure if Prince Klassen will be cuttin' it up tonight at Red Fez since he's supposed to be soundtracking the free beer hour up on 7th street. However, Orion will be in the mix and that dude is pretty amazing behind the decks. I'm sure if you're reading my blog you're quite aware of that.

The party don't start 'til I walk in 'til 2am at End Bar//Biker Gallery (formerly The Music Gym). That's when the unlimited free drinks start flowin', the DJ booth starts bangin' and the door starts charging their $5 mandatory donation. TABC be damned, the party rages on after bar hours in Austin!
